Routing in a Polygonal Terrain with the Shortest Beacon Watchtower

چکیده
In a paper by Biro et al. [2], a novel twist on guarding in art galleries, motivated by geographical greedy routing in sensor networks, is introduced. A beacon is a point that when activated induces a force of attraction, or repulsion that can move points within the environment. The effect of a beacon is similar to standard visibility with some additional properties. The effects of a beacon are asymmetric leading to separate algorithms to compute the “beacon kernel” and “inverse beacon kernel”. In Biro [1] O(n) algorithms are given to compute the beacon kernel and inverse beacon kernels in simple polygons. In this paper we revisit the problem of computing the shortest watchtower to guard a 2D terrain, using the properties of beacons, and we present an O(n log n) time algorithm that computes the shortest beacon watchtower. In doing this we introduce O(n log n) algorithms to compute the beacon kernel in a simple polygon and an inverse beacon kernel in a terrain polygon. Similar ideas are then used for an algorithm to compute the inverse beacon kernel in a monotone polygon in O(n log n) time.

Generalized Voronoi Diagrams on Polyhedral Terrains
We present an algorithm for computing exact shortest paths, and consequently distances, from a generalized source (point, segment, polygonal chain or polygonal region) on a polyhedral terrain in which polygonal chain or polygon obstacles are allowed. We also present algorithms for computing discrete Voronoi diagrams of a set of generalized sites (points, segments, polygonal chains or polygons) ...
متن کاملOn the Planar Two-Watchtower Problem
Given a polyhedral terrain (mountain landscape), the shortest watchtower problem is to compute the shortest vertical segment uv erected on the terrain such that every point on the surface of the terrain is visible from the top of uv, say u. The problem arises in geographical information systems , military surveillance, etc. The problem was rst studied by Sharir Sh88], who presented an O(n log 2...
متن کاملCombinatorics of Beacon Routing and Coverage
We consider combinatorial problems motivated by sensor networks for beacon-based point-to-point routing and covering. A beacon b is a point that can be activated to effect a ‘magnetic pull’ toward itself everywhere in a polygonal domain P . The routing problem asks how many beacons are required to route between any pair of points in a polygonal domain P . In simple polygons with n vertices we s...

We consider beacons, an analog of geographical greedy routing, motivated by sensor network applications. A beacon b is a point that can be activated to create a ‘magnetic pull’ towards itself everywhere in a polygonal domain P . We explore the properties of beacons and their effect on points in polygons, as well as demonstrate polynomial-time algorithms to compute a variety of structures define...
متن کاملA Novel Protection Guaranteed, Quality of Transmission Aware Routing and Wavelength Assignment Algorithm for All-optical Networks
Transparent All Optical Networks carry huge traffic and any link failure can cause the loss of gigabits of data; hence protection and its guarantee becomes necessary at the time of failure. Many protection schemes were presented in the literature, but none of them speaks about protection guarantee. Also, in all optical networks, due to absence of regeneration capabilities, the physical layer i...
